Kyle Beach update |

I went to the Spokane Chiefs/Seattle Thunderbirds game last night. Beach is playing for Spokane. So far this season he has been on fire, scoring 13 goals in
the first 13 games of the season going into last night. He is playing RW. I have to say that for most of the first two periods I was pretty unimpressed. I
don't know if I was expecting a "man among boys" type of thing but I was definitely expecting more than what I saw early on. On the positive side
he definitely active, consistently tapping the ice, calling for the puck. You could tell that he wanted the puck and wanted to try and make plays with the
puck. In the offensive zone he showed some physicality. He finished his checks and didn't mind mixing it up in the corners. In the defensive zone he had a
bad habit of hanging back at the blue line looking for the outlet pass. He rarely, if ever forechecked. My biggest criticism would be that he looked like he
was trying to cherry pick sometimes, that's how far back he was playing on defense. He would kind of drift around at center ice waiting for the puck to
move towards him which I did not like at all. Late in the second period the score was 1-0, Seattle. I am going to try to type this from memory. It happened so
fast and there is no replay on the scoreboard. The puck got dumped in behind the goal and came out along the right boards. Beach picked it up and kind of
drifted/sprang/skated backwards off the boards to between the circles and just ripped a wrister over the goalie's glove hand. That was definitely an
eye-opener. That thing was a laser beam and reminded me of Kane's turn-around wrister from a few games ago as far as the accuracy. Anyway, that goal showed
me that the kid can play and has some special ability as far as goal-scoring goes. It was his ninth goal in the last 5 games. He also took a roughing minor at
the end of the second. After he scored the goal he cupped his gloved hand to his ear b/c he had been getting booed and jeered for a good part of the game.
Spokane won the game 2-1. So final conclusion from this fan's eyeballs: the kid is a pure goal-scorer who can disappear for long stretches of the game and
is weak defensively. He is still a very unfinished product. But from that goal he scored I can see why they drafted him so high. There is big-time potential if
they can break some of his poor habits. He's only 19 so I doubt he would be up next year, probably by 2011 is my guess.

Wow, great update. Nothing like first hand info.
Thanks for the confimation about his play. Definatley looks like hes trying to pad his scoring stats. Cherrypicking wont happen when he goes to Rockford and definatley not with the Hawks so he'll be forced to play defense. His shot does sound encouraging though. Always welcome first hand observations. Great post. |

Ya hopefully you're right, Dany. Beach was taken around where Jack Skille was, so he won't be that cheap.
Lalonde just isn't ready yet though. He's certainly got some goal scoring/puck moving/power play talent, and let's hope his PP skills translate because it certainly looks like this team needs help on the point, but he certainly isn't going to be a bulldozer and that's likely what the Hawks need on the back end.

Makarov may never play for the hawks. He is holding out in Russia, so to speak, until the Hawks offer him a 1-way contract, which, so far, he hasn't come
close to earning. While He should be in Rockford learning the NA game, he instead continues to suck the hind tit for his Russian team and slip further into
obscurity. Kid is a headcase.

Between Makarov and Vorobiev there's three eyebrows, about half a brain and possibly a testicle.

I like the fact that the hawks don't have to rush a guy like Beach or Lalonde or Aliu or Olsen or....You get the point. The hawks can let them develop at a
sower rate. That type of depth will pay huge dividends. The grater Depth that can develop in the minors the better. I know some will argue that a guy like
Ebbett on the hawks is a flag to the lack of depth. But bring up guy who are not ready will be more harmful then beneficial. And Ebbett for good or bad (mostly
bad) gives time these guys need.To for stall any objections guys like Datsyuk and Zetterberg and Roy and others took 3-4 years to reach the NHL level. So
unless there a total bust like Kontiola or Skille. We (as critics) should let them develop.

Beach is playing the type of game Spokane wants. He is one of their main guys and yes, he has been told what he wants to hear and not what he necessarily needs
to hear to be a solid two way NHL player. That has always been a knock against him (injuries too).
Beach will work out. He will be successful in the NHL. It has always been, too what degree? Can you blame Makarov? He is caught in two hockey worlds. One where he grew up, is comfortable and can make a dissent living and the other that is really unknown to him culture wise and has a lot more money and expectations. His play would be a good addition to the Hawks as it is more North American than European. I just don't see him ever making to the States. Not a waste of talent, but a possible waste of a draft pick. On the other hand, the Hawks have drafted a lot worse a lot higher. On Ebbett, enough typing wasted on him already. |
