I was optimistic from the off season moves, and that was confirmed by the fast start to the season. The concern throughout that first 3 months was always the defense, due to the number of goals they were giving up, but they were winning, ... so fuck it, .. who wants pie?The 9 game skid really illuminated all the problems they had in the closet, and to make matters worse, their GM was unwilling to come out of it. I'm equally impressed and encouraged with both mini-steaks (4 & 3 game) that they were able to pull considering the competition in those sequences, but they continue to lay eggs against teams that are beatable with the same effort. I really think the 6th seed in the West is the Rosetta Stone of this years playoffs. None of the Pacific teams are without issues, and if Dallas some how winds up winning that division, you would have to feel real good about that round. IMO, the 4 or 5 slot are sheer misery. I'd rather finish 8th and take on Vancouver, than finish 4/5 and face STL/DET/NASH with or without home ice. The only thing that really matter now is getting Towes, Hjalmarrson, & Montador back for the post season, cause if they arn't ready by then, ya might as well not even make the playoffs.

Corman's right, it's a good post. I think a LOT of the overreaction came from that 9 game skid. I know it can't just be removed, but it's really the only hiccup in a season that's otherwise been consistently pretty strong. I like the 6 seed a lot, myself. But I wouldn't mind any seed if the Hawks got in because no team scares me. Vancouver I'd like to avoid until the stakes are a bit higher, but other than that, bring on anyone. Hawks have taken points off Detroit all year, and they match up well. StL can't really be this good--they've got little star power and their goalies are in deep water without a life vest right now. I'm still amazed both have been so solid for so long, something's got to give. Nashville won their first playoff series ever last year, and I think that while their style is good for the regular season it's tough to win in the playoffs with it. West feels wide open--let's just get in and see if damage can be caused.

While I wouldn't be shocked if they missed the playoffs, with 15 games left it's becoming a numbers game. The only teams left with a shot to bump them out are LA, Colorado, and to a lesser extent Calgary. LA has 2 games in hand, Calgary 1. The 6 seed is very much up for grabs though, and with 3 games in hand, San Jose is in pretty good shape to move up and slot the Hawks lower.
